If

http://www.worldsfai...e&module=search

returns advanced search page

why does

http://www.worldsfai...ch&do=new_posts

return same as: (subset of topics chrono since 9/10/200)

http://www.worldsfai...arch_filter_app[forums]=1

returns 3,602 topics but not new posts while skipping some new topics {like this topic}, some new replies and some new posts?

It's an upgrade from the one that worked.

Mike and I have noticed that topics that we post to don't show up in the list of "Recently added topics". When I was posting about the Canobie lamps, I couldn't get to my own topic without "drilling down to it" (Mike's excellent description) from the PTU starting page.

I have lousy luck with searches in PTU unless I remember a specific, unusual word from the topic to search on. Might just be me.

i find it helpful to go to advanced search and check search on topics - otherwise it seems to default to mucking around in the text

Yes, view new content seems to exclude one's own postings. Not a good feature, IMHO. Maybe there's a toggle switch somewhere to stop the exclusion.
And once you've read something and go back to view new content, it seems to exclude that one too.

How about this, the next time any of this happens you tell me about it in great detail.

What were you attempting to do: the post, the search, the operating system, the browser (with version number). Whatever you were trying to do and how you were doing it. What you were expecting to happen and what actually happened.

As far as I can tell the system is working as designed.

When was the last time you noticed a new topic didn't show up in the "Recently Added Topics" list? What was the topic?

See below for an update on this. If you post a topic and click "View New Content" you are not going to see it because you were just there. The system thinks you read it and it's no longer new. The system is making the assumption you won't want to read the thing you just wrote. You're not going to see it again until someone responds, until there's something new for you to see.

To see all active topics within the last 24 hours (yes, I know you wish the time-span were user definable) you click "View Active Content." Your new post will be there.

Some of these things can be changed or we can add more but it requires knowledge of regular expressions.

I'm sorry this has been so disruptive for some of you but we don't want the board software to get out of date again. If we had stayed with an older version it would eventually open us up to security risks (new exploits are discovered but the software is no longer in development and the holes are not patched) as it was spammers were finding new ways to get into the board. Not upgrading now, waiting a few versions, also means we may lose the upgrade path, the developer may not support upgrades from version a to version c. We had this happen with the old Ultimate Bulletin Board which is no longer in development and no longer supported.

So here's what you need to do to change your View New Content Method and Forum [search] Results Display.

In the upper, right-hand corner click on your name.

Select "My Settings"

Select "General Settings" (should already be selected)

Scroll down to "Search Settings"

View New Content Method

  • Show me all new content since my last visit
  • Show me all content that I have not read
Forum Results Display

  • Show results like a forum
  • Show results as a list
There are also a few new options in Advanced Search.

Thank you Marc. Every time there is a new version I tend to feel a little lost. Change can be tough when you're used to something. After a relatively short time I generally adjust to the new version okay. It helps that people ask questions which are then answered and/or dealt with. Thank you once again for all your hard work keeping the board up and running! And thank you everyone who asks the questions (I generally have many of them myself and love to see them answered).
