Recent pics of Expo Site

Recommended Posts

Hi, am just back from Seattle, with a day trip to Vancouver. Here are pics of the last three buildings from Expo 86. The BC Pav is now a casino. They just tore down half of the Plaza of Nations and seem to be putting in apartments (I could not find out from people there if the rest of the Plaza of Nations is coming down). And the Science Center is popular with families. Enjoy.

Thanks, Gary. Sad to see that so little remains. Is there anything there in the way of signage to at least let people know what was once there?

Hi, Bill, I saw no markers at all - but my visit to the main site was very brief, about a half hour. Aside from the 3 remaining buildings, most of the site has been or is being developed for apartments, etc., it seems. BTW, I forgot to include Canada Place, the former Canada Pav., located off the main site. I spent a fair amount of time here and in the neighborhood. It is quite nice and was designed from the start to be a ship terminal and convention center. And it is good looking! Here's a couple of pics from last week:

What's that Chevron barge in the middle of the bay near the Convention Center?

I heard they are going to install extensive docking & fueling facilities for yachts and cruise ships for the Winter Olympics two years from now. Basically the whole bay will be floating hotel rooms.

Update:

Scratch 'two years from now'. February 2010 is now less than a year and a half away.

The floating gas stations have been in Coal Harbour for the better part of 60 years. Maybe longer. They are for power boats, fishing boats and cabin cruisers. I don't think they hold enough gas for cruise ships. That kind of filling up would probably be done while docked at the pier.
