World's Fairs at the Rose Parade

Recommended Posts

On today's Rose Parade television coverage on Los Angeles KTLA Channel 5 (I'm not sure how extensive the coverage was for east coasters), there were at least two things with World's Fair connections- one a direct connection, and one a "descendent".

Did you catch them?

Caught the Rocket Man on three different feeds - ABC in high def, also recorded the HGTV version from the satellite and ditto the Travel Channel version, which used the KTLA feed. ABC interviewed the pilot briefly - he was SO bright and positive, he came over as a one-man promoter, kind of like the "Famous Chicken" - but it was really great to see. They claimed he had only 30 seconds of fuel, and I timed him at 27 seconds airborne.

The Rocket Man is indeed a descendant from "our" '64-65 World's Fair.

The other one was when they (at least KTLA) showed color film footage of the January 1940 Rose Parade, and there was a float for the World's Fair being held up in the Bay Area on Treasure Island. The side of the float said 'Pleasure Island' and it featured a large reproduction of the Tower of the Sun.
