Ever wonder why the ground at the Fair site has settled so much over the years?

Recommended Posts

These photos might show why. They are labeled "Sanitary Fill - World's Fair" and "Sanitary Fill Close Up", both dated August 1961. A close look shows a LOT of rusting cans and other rusty metal. Many look like beer cans. They were already rusting when dumped into the ground, and I imagine by now much of the metal has been eaten away leaving voids for the soil to collapse into. Newly restored 35mm slides.

Does this mean that stuff was dumped at the site after the 1939 Fair?  Or was it all a part of the debris and ashes dumped there prior to the 1939 Fair?

I imagine it would have to be dumped there after the 1939 Fair.
