Another aerial view from early 1964

The Hall of Science is under construction just past Ford at the top. Under that is the Press Building, New Mexico, Illinois, and on the bottom right, the Long Island Rail Road. On the left is a corner of the United States Pavilion and above that Hollywood USA. Newly restored 35mm slide.

It’s still incredible to consider virtually everything in this photo is gone and has been for over fifty years.

Well, I don't see the mystery building with the blue and white striped roof.

When you start to tell people about it, some seem to be struck with disbelief.

It was as if you were trying to tell them that we landed on the moon fifty years ago.

Over 41 years of teaching high school and college history classes I often told stories about this fair, about Expo 67 and about many of the great world expositions.  Each was a snapshot of a moment in time and a reflection of the hopes, dreams and even fears of their respective age.  Almost to a person, students expressed disbelief that such events came and went and even defined an era.  They were stunned that so little remains of any of these events and many expressed regret that they might never experience anything quite like these ephemeral fairs.

Considering the seemingly glacial pace of changes at Disney World, it's incredible that something as large as the NYWF was built at all, and unimaginable that any company would put that kind of money into pavilions that would exist for only 2 years.

I’ve often marveled that these fairs attracted FAR more people in one season than any amusement or theme park could ever hope to attract.  Nearly fifty one million packed Expo 67 in one season and while the 1964-65 NYWF didn’t do as well, the more than 25 million each season is a huge number.  No theme park can even aspire to attendance numbers like those
