skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 4, 2016 Finally! I bought a digital copy of two of the Canadian Pavilion brochures/books from Expo 67. I always have been fascinated with the Canadian expo 67 exhibit and how comprehensive it was. What I didn't know was how well done the pavilion and the brochures actually were. Attached is the general Canadian Pavilion brochure that was available to all during the fair. I was expecting a very simple little pamphlet but was blown away with how detailed it was. What impressed me were the axonometric graphics, the cross sections and how they attempted to explain the complicated exhibit layout as simply and easily as possible. A pavilion sanctuary? Progressive. A remote control toy ice breaker rescue scenario played out hourly in a specially built outdoor viewing theatre/pond? Awesome. Library, art gallery, 5 restaurants, cine carousel, innovative child creative centre, and UKI a fire breathing sea monster all thrown in to boot. Well done! Roger Report post Posted June 4, 2016 Here are seven more brochures for the Canadian Pavilion: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/b3.pdf https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/b4.pdf https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/b5.pdf https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/B1.pdf https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/B2.pdf https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/B6.pdf https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/B7.pdf

skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 6, 2016 (edited) One part of the Canadian Pavilion that I was always curious about was the LAND of CANADA part. Eureka! You can read about it here on pages 6,7,8 - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/B2.pdf See below. the three pyramids in red below are the main part of the LAND of CANADA section...along with a sculptural metal wall behind it. I could never figure out what the exhibit was and how you viewed it. The pages above explain it a bit but its hard to visualize it without seeing it in use. Surprised there are no pictures of it on the internet. My take is that you look up at the dark areas between the diamond pyramids to the see the movies and hear the song. Interesting that there are few pictures of the actual exhibits from Expo. Its like people never thought of cataloguing the entire experience. Even some of the National Film Board of Canada films only focus on certain parts of the pavilion and not the entire experience from beginning to end. Thanks Roger for posting the other pamphlets. Awesome. Sorry folks but I always have problems downloading snipped images to this site. Lets try again. Photo goes with my post above. Roger Report post Posted June 7, 2016 I wrote a very descriptive document on the Canadian Pavilion last year (rather large - over 700 pages). It's very detailled and there's a lot of photos. It might give you a better idea of the Canadian Complex. Unfortunately, it's in French but still... the last section are press articles that comes from both French and English newspapers. It could be useful I think https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Canada/Fiche%20Canada_Final_WEB.pdf
Jim Report post Posted June 7, 2016 When I think of the demolition of what was left of Expo in the 1980s, it's interesting that, on Ile Notre Dame, the pavilions of France and Quebec were preserved and later morphed into a new life as the Casino de Montreal. Ontario, next to Quebec, had burned years earlier. But the Canadian complex, or most of it fell to the wrecking ball. I wonder what consideration was given to preserving the Katimavik or other parts of the complex beyond the small part that was saved. It was so iconic and along with the US geodesic dome, a symbol of Expo. It must have been a sad day when it was destroyed.
skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 Oh no! I cant download it. Drop box doesn't like me. This sounds fantastic Roger...thank you! Now please do one for all of the pavilions that I want to know about but was too young to visit. LOL
Roger Report post Posted June 7, 2016 I'm doing just that... I already wrote over 50 of these Expo ’67 history documents – more to come in the following months. You’ll also find a copy of the five-volume official report for Expo ’67 (about 3,000 pages). Here’s the address to get them all (everything is free and will remain free): http://www.villes-ephemeres.org/
skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 Absolutely brilliant, Roger. Just a great job in compiling all of this information. The photos are fantastic and your level of detail in what you cover is amazing. My French is not very good but I was able to read bits and pieces here and there. Any plans to translate portions into English?
Roger Report post Posted June 7, 2016 Yes, but I wan't to complete all the french documents first - I plan to translate everything, but starting only in autumn 2017 (next year, the 50th, will be rather busy...)
skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 7, 2016 Roger, one thing I notice is that you don't go into detail regarding the LAND of CANADA section, how did one view this exhibit? The pavilion book says the original idea was to look through peep holes around 3 big spheres to see the movie and hear the song. This was changed to 3 diamond shapes due to ease of access and to fit in with the angular/pyramid mineral physical look of the overall pavilion.
Roger Report post Posted June 7, 2016 There were open windows in the side of the structure - both the film and the exbitits could only be viewed from these - here's a better photo: (this one was taken early in the morning, about an hour before opening

Roger Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Weird, it shows when I view the post page. This is the main reason why I'm not very active on this site, managing photos here is a pain... I just posted that photo on the Faceboob Expo '67 group, you'll be able to see ut there , full size: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2315922460/
skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 I see what you mean. Thanks for posting on Facebook! Roger, your blog site is fantastic. I love how much detail you have in the pdf overviews you have created for each pavilion or event. Brilliant. Thanks for this. Really feels like I was got to know each place. Roger, one last thing. Is there a faster way to download all of your pdfs that you have done so far? My computer tries to download but gets stopped due to taking too much time. Thanks!! Roger Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Unfortunately, I have to use Dropbox because of the size of the files which is probably why you have problems. But there are not that big, I don't know why your computer is having so much trouble wuith them...
skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 is it possible if you send me the link for the Quebec Pavilion? I was lucky enough to see it back in the early 80's. Did you do one for Ontario too? Just incredible. Roger...its all that I wanted to know about these places. What a gift.
Roger Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Here’s the link for the Quebec pavilion. But this is one of the first doc. that I wrote, in 2011, and my documents have evolved quite a lot since then. It will be rewritten next month. As an example, I rewrote the British pavilion document recently and it went from 46 pages to over 250 pages… Ontario will be published next autumn https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13503829/Fiche%20Quebec_Final_WEB.pdf
skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Fantastic...many thanks Roger. Excited to read it. You also did a separate one on the concept design for Quebec?
skysurfer66 Report post Posted June 8, 2016 Man, still cant download your pdfs. I cant even download your 5 page brewers pavilion pdf. I click on it and it shows that its trying to connect and then it just times out. I did manage to download your Canada Pavilion pdf which was brilliant. If I am having issues perhaps others are too? Too bad.
