I remember this is known as Paolo Volodor or pole flying. It is an ancient Mexica (Aztec) custom honoring the god Xippe Totec, the god of rain. I remember telling ninth graders about this tradition when we discussed Native American cultures. The practice may go back over 800 years. It really is quite remarkable.
