Is English-English that much different than US-English, or has the BBC just gotten sloppy?

Burnt and burned are both past tense of burn. Burnt is used more frequently in the UK while burned is more common in Canada and the USA. Americans tend to use burnt as and adjective while burnt is past tense of a verb in England.
