Where is Flushing Meadows?

Recommended Posts

There it is again--the constant comparisons to Chicago and its Fair. At first glance, it is an issue of urban rivalry. It is probably the only real comparison the press and the organizers could make since there had not been a major US fair since 1904. I also noticed that FDR "indorsed" the New York Fair.

I believe that rivalry was very real. Chicago had won the financial support to host an exposition to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the New World (it became the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893) and NYC never quite got over that "defeat." Even the title to tallest building was a competition and Chicago won with the Sears Tower in 1973. It is taller than the Empire State or the former twin towers. But the new One World Trade Center will, technically, be taller than Chicago's Willis (Sears) Tower.
