Skating rink at the NYC Building

Recommended Posts

Well, it says roller skates provided, but says nothing about ice skates provided. One would think an ice skating rink would rent ice skates. (and we've seen photos of ice skating going on in there-- and it looks like one huge room- basically the whole open building.)

I had always assumed they ran it as an ice rink in the winter months and a roller skating rink in the summer months.

Here's a couple of interesting photos from the Library of Congress, dated Feb. 9, 1941, and they are captioned Flushing Meadow Park - Skating Rink - Roller Skating.

Interesting that there's some kind of partition across the middle of the room.

According to the current tenant, the QMA, "the north side of the building, now the Queens Museum, housed a roller rink and the south side offered an ice rink".
