Homemade Stereo Views

Recommended Posts

I have 14 stereo images from 1965 of various views around the fair. They were produced by Ethan P. Jackman at the Stereo View Club in Meadville, PA. They were originally mounted on nice thick stereo mount card stock. All have separated which made them easier to scan.

The quality is poor as many should have been taken as a hyperstereo because the subject matter was more in the background not lending itself to good stereo depth. Many are mounted a little crooked as the pairs were printed on one piece of photo paper and were most likely sharing one frame of film. One shot of ATT is printed backwards left right images! They have been printed on B&W photo paper and there has been a lot of fading and uneven fixation.

I have only adjusted color saturation a little and maybe pushed some brightness and contrast to get them here on-line. I will eventually rescan at high resolution and convert to anaglyph for easier viewing.

Here they are in no particular order:

Enjoy!

Interesting, but they are really in sad shape. Too bad you don't have access to the negatives.

The photographer may still have them - there's an Ethan P. Jackman listed as the Town Historian for Lloyd, NY. Can't be too many folks with that name.

Interesting that the Pieta shot being auctioned doesn't have all the white dust (dirt on the negative) that's on Mitch's copy. It's the least faded/stained of all in both cases, and the others are all much worse.

Personal opinion only: would be worth this kind of money if the subjects actually were rare, but not as someone's stereo hobby experiment of things that have thousands of existing 2D shots. The Pieta is the only one that can claim some rarity as a photo of this quality, as amateur shots at the time did not come out well with the dim indoor lighting.

I exchanged messages with the seller on eBay. They confirmed the extremely low quality of the images. So I seems they weren't victims of time, just a bad photographer/camera.
