"The City" In It’s Entirety!

Recommended Posts

The singular most important film connected to the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, as integral to the fair's history as Grover Whalen, The Futurama, The Trylon & Perisphere, Elektro and broadcast Television.

With that build up I had to watch it, but I'm not sure now why I did. What's the NYWF tie-in and why was it so important?

Bill, This film was first shown at the 39 Fair.I guess the tie in was in building the world of tommorrow and its utopian image.

Hi Bill,

this is the "why" and "how" for the World of Tomorrow. The little city of Greenbelt was already in existence - to me is was one of the towns in the Democracity or the Futurama, or at least how you'd strive to get there. It could all be, and often was - right now. That was what this Fair was about.

Best,

Eric

I understand the concept being tied in with the fair, but was this actually shown there?

Hi Bill,

Yes, it was show at the 1939 NY fair. I can't recall in what building at the moment (I see my memory still works - Science and Education Buildig), but it is referenced in the Byrd/Johnson video from 1989 and clips are shown there as well.

Best,

Eric
