  1. More on the Ever Present Nuns

...and don't forget those Franciscan Brothers. Brother Thomas had a brass ruler in which he had inscribed "Beatumplenty". Many a sore knuckle or buttocks felt the sting of that instrument of terror.
  2. Edwin Newman at the Fair

With the recent passing of the great NBC newsman Edwin Newman, a friend on Facebook posted the following clip.

  4. USS Atlas white cement for NYSP terrazzo

Here are some shots of the Universal Atlas plant, in a little worse shape than NYSP. http://www.flickr.com/photos/forgottenpitt...57594520207660/
  5. 1941 NYC Kodachrome 3"x4" Transparency Restored

Mike, for a picture of 80 Lafayette Street try Google. Most of NYC has been digitized from the top of a car. Click on streetview. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=80...=1&ct=title

Just stumbled on this about the NYSP: http://queenscrap.blogspot.com/2008/11/deb...oop-theory.html
  8. Some opposing viewpoints on the NYSP

Thanks Al for bringing some sense to that blog. Not a nice bunch over there.
  9. 1966 Demolition Photos... Aerials!

Great site! Thanks. This will help me with next week's homework assignment. I am currently attending St. John's University for my Master's in Library Science. This week we're studying map resources!

    Happy Birthday, Ray.
  11. Shea Stadium

I went to last night's game. OUCH. It seemed that the Mets were just not in to it. It is sad to hear the language some fans yell when the game doesn't go the right way. Last night to me was special, not only was it the last night game played at Shea, it was the first time I took the LIRR from Woodside to Willets Point since the World's Fair!
  12. The Iron Triangle Redux

Forgotten NY has a great piece on Flushing's Iron Triangle: http://forgotten-ny.com/NEIGHBORHOODS/iron...e/triangle.html
  13. Getting ready for the U.S. Open

I noticed on the way to and from work today that the LIRR has lots of orange vested personnel on the Woodside Station platform to "assist" the folks going to the US Open.
  14. What models are these 1964 Fords?

Pictures 1 & 3 are more than likely 1965. Picture 2 is 1964. The car on the distant left is a '64 Mercury Monterey/Montclair/Park Lane. The car on the far right is a '64 Galaxie. Here's a good sight for all things Mercury: http://www.mercurystuff.com/

  16. New Yorks Past.....I'm feeling nostalgic today

I still listen to the radio at night to get to sleep. Not much good in the NY market. I can usually pull in WBZ Boston. WNEW was best-William B. Williams! I also listened to Long John Nebel & Candy Jones on WMCA-they make Art Bell (who I like) seem like an amateur!

I'm sorry I missed this. Did the MINIs takes the States convoy from Mahwah to Boston Friday. Tried to make it down from Boston Sunday but traffic was nuts. Looks like you folks had a great time. Will make it next time.
  18. Tonight's Shuttle Launch - Anyone Else See It?

As Vladimir said, heavy clod layer here in NYC area. Watched it on the NASA channel.

Please include me in this. Always wanted to do this. Pete
  20. Tonight's Shuttle Launch - Anyone Else See It?

Funny you should ask. I drove down to Robert Moses State Park tonight after work. I had it timed perfectly. It takes roughly 7 1/2 minutes for the shuttle to reach the coast of NY(launch 02:28). I pulled over near the water tower, walked up a dune and naturally, a State Parks dept officer pulls up with lights flashing. I explained why I was there, he thought I said shuttle to dredging barge off shore! He finally understood-asked me to leave. I had one minute to go (02:35). Never saw it-and the sky over the Atlantic was clear. Odd thing is, I saw a shuttle when I lived on 24th street in Chelsea. I went up on the roof a few minutes after launch, and voila, there it was tracing south to north across the eastern horizon.

Excellent-I am so jealous One day I'll get up there. My dad didn't take me up there when I was 5, but one day!

  23. Apartment with great views of FMCP

Actually this is a good buy. The old NY Telephone building in downtown Brooklyn (101 Willoughby St.) had one bedroom units were going for 1.5 million! I see they've dropped in price to 1/2 million. Insane.
  24. Apartment with great views of FMCP

I draw the line on $150 a month for parking (actually cheap compared to Manhattan). I used to live in Kew Gardens-on street parking was awful. One night we returned home from Manhattan, my neighbors Scirocco was teetering on 2 cinderblocks-his new Michelins were GONE.
  25. Individuals who visited the Fair

That's my favorite scene in the movie! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSq5y_NU9N8
