  1. My brother in law used to work for Clarke & Rapuano and told me some interesting stories about the Unisphere. The original design which was later nixed called for the orb to rotate. This is news to me. I have the name of one of the guys that worked on the construction of it. I am going to write him and see if he has any great stuff to share with us.
  2. Navy and USMC at Fair?

Does anyone know where the Marines and Navy were located at the Fair? Yesterday I saw NYWF brochures for both units but they did not indicate the location. I know the Coast Guard was in one of the Candela structures.
  3. Praise for the New York State Pavilion

Jim I agree with your comments about Nelson Rockefeller. I visited Kykuit the estate in Tarrytown this past fall and was blown away by his vision and love of the arts. He even has Warhol's in the collection there. I am sure it was difficult for him to - see the 13 Most Wanted painted over in spite of the perceived political impact. He truly loved New York State. Kykuit is worth a visit for sure if anyone is in the area. It is stunning. I had lunch at the Red Hat Bistro in the old Burnham Boiler Factory right on the Hudson a few miles south. Incredible views.
  4. The Unisphere

Very interesting Dan. This type of stuff is hard to come by.
  5. You are Here Map- Help please? Interesting!

Hi Doug - that house is like a classic late 1950's to 1960's ranch home. There is one in my town that is similar and the family that owns it has preserved it in all it's 60's splendor furnishings and all. It belongs in Architectural Digest. When I was raving about the house to my brother he said "back then homes were built by carpenters - today they are built by laborers" He may be right to a certain degree.
  6. You are Here Map- Help please? Interesting!

Mitch where was the location at the fair of the last photo you posted with the home in the background?
  7. Plastic Model of the Day

Randy I don't know what it is but yes it does have 4 screws on the bottom.
  8. Plastic Model of the Day

Here is my plastic model of the day. Found in my Aunt Mae's house - the same place I extracted a NYWF dino from behind the sink a few years back. Wedged since the fair. Maybe this is a fair relic as well.
  9. Thanks Bill and Randy - as I wrote Bill Young yesterday life has intervened. I enjoy reading the board and am looking forward to participating more. Hello again to all.
  10. Greyhound Escorter Wiring

Does anyone know of the whereabouts of the Erie County Fairgrounds Fleet?
  11. Hi Bill - I have a large Topping Unisphere model which may have been a Topping prototype (it is RM desk model size) but it is colored and the nations are labeled. I also have a set of Unisphere plans. Not sure if these are of interest as the real Unisphere is right in FMCP.
  12. 50th Anniversary Gathering in New York

I would surely be interested. I am away until the 19th but would love to try for anything after that date.
  13. Leisurerama Homes at Macy's

A freind just sent me this great link.
  14. I did a quick check to see if this was posted previously and did not find anything. I stumbled upon this yesterday and visited. The exihibit is small but worthwhile and features images provided by Mr. Bill Cotter! They do have a virtual exhibit too. https://boxoffice.mcny.org/public/show.asp?shcode=487
  15. Hi Bill I have Unisphere plans but that is it.
  16. Candela Structures at the World's Fair Marina

Hi all it has been a while since I posted. Nice to see everyone keeping the fair alive. I probably posted this already but the missing Candela has been found in upstate NY. Would love to have one myself. http://www.flickr.com/photos/catasterist/5140467501/
  17. Titanic

Hello all. Never know what you will find on the PTU site. Interesting discussion here. Been a Titanic follower since I read Walter Lord's book "A Night to Remember" back in 1968. I watched the part 2 portion of the History Channel show where they did the virtual recreation of the wreck. Never ceases to intrigue me.
  18. In the news today

I read in an AP release today that author Ken Kesey died. Perhaps his most famous work was "One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest". I did not know that his "Merry Pranksters" (who later became famous for driving their psychedelic painted bus to Woodstock) initially painted the bus they named "Futher" and set out cross country from California to visit the 1964 New York World's Fair. Kesey was in with an unsavory crowd that included Timothy Leary and the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test which may have actually been conducted on that 1964 trip from a cooler on the bus. I had only heard about the bus and the trip to Woodstock. I had no idea it began with the Fair. A curious and kooky bunch - and it is kind of funny that the Fair was their destination back then.
  19. I noticed over the past several weeks that the Candela structure on the right (facing marina from Shea)has a large break above the right street side leg. Last Sunday the city had roped off the area with caution tape. I hope this does not spell its demise.
  20. The bronze armillary sphere and sundial by Paul Manship that stood in Manship Pool near the Unisphere disappeared some time ago. I have heard a wild story about it being taken by gun toting theives. Does anyone know the real story and the date it disappeared? I would imagine that a police report or news article would detail a theft of it.
  21. MGM: Hollywood's Greatest Backlot

Thanks for that link Bill. I just love old Hollywood.
  22. Something Fun for the Ford Fans

Great stuff. Check out this site with the Mustang concept cars. Not what showed up for the NYWF debut in 1964. http://ford.artehouse.com/perl/options.pl?imageID=63076&productTypeID=57
  23. Astral Fountain Lights

I drove by the Orange County Fair Speedway yesterday to show my sister the luminaires and to my dismay the 2 Astral Fountain lights are gone or I hope moved. The luminaires have declined substantially over the past 5 years. I would not be surprised if they remove them soon. Sad to see.
  24. Astral Fountain Lights

Hi Gary I should have known you were on the preservation trail with the AF Lights. Great work and thank you for the update!!
  25. Missing Candela structure found in the Adirondacks!

Paul and Kirsten did a great job on the exhibition last year. Incredible that they uncovered the last Candela. I can't wait to hear the rest of this story.
