The Way it Was

If anyone would like to remember how beautiful the twin towers were - here is a very nice reminder. (Bill the lobby photo which you described as "cathederal like" in one of your posts is very nice) The 3D walk through is also very nice.

Thanks for the wonderful link.
Minoru Yamasaki, the designer of the towers also designed the Federal Pavilion for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The building is now the Pacific Science Center.

Today, Andy Rooney's syndicated column was a collection of imaginary questions for that monster in Afghanistan. Several questions are impressive. 1) If it is heroic to crash an airplane into buildings full of innocent people, why weren't you on one of those planes? 2) Have you ever wept for a loved one who has died? 3) Do you realize that while you outright murdered 7,000 innocent people, you have caused over 100,000 loved ones to grieve and suffer? I am paraphrasing Mr.Rooney, but the message is clear. We have lost so much. We face a foe who is pure evil and the most dangerous force since Hitler. However, in the midst of tragedy, New York has never looked more noble and proud. I look forward to my next visit to the greatest city in the world. I don't know what this post has to do with the wonderful WTC site offered by Mary Ellen, but I just wanted to say this.

There is a site plan drawing on that site.
Can someone tell me which of those buildings were destroyed, besides 1 & 2 ? I have yet to hear a definative list.
Reading down further, I found the answer to my own question:
"The list of collapsed buildings confirmed through Saturday by the New York Times includes all seven buildings of the World Trade center complex — including WTC 6, the U.S Customs House to the north; WTC 3, the 22 story Marriot World Trade Center hotel just west of Tower Two; and WTC 4 and 5, the Plaza Buildings to the east (although satellite images suggest much of WTC 5, the north Plaza Building, is still standing). Other nearby buildings are significantly damaged, including in particular One Liberty Plaza, a 54 floor, 743' tall building across Church Street to the east."

I've sent Bill a link with many photos of the destruction. He may place it on here

The story that goes with the pictures is a very intersting read as well.

I came across this article from 4/64. Realtors said the Trade Center would cause a glut of rentable space in lower Manhattan.

Back in 1982 I worked for Manufacturers Hanover Trust who did the finiancing for much of Battery Park City. They worried about the same things in 82 as in 64. Some things never change. And... maybe they do.
